[edit] The Moon Controversy

Several times the comics make a jump forward in time to show what happens years later. Normally it is assumed that the next comic does not follow after these future events, but instead follows the events before the jump. However in the June 18th 2003 comic T-rex is shown to travel to the moon seven years into the future. As this trip to the moon has been referred to later in both the November 9th 2004 comic and the September 30th 2005 comic there seems the following comics really must take place 7 years later. However this poses some problems:

  • Did T-rex and Dromiceiomimus break up twice?
  • Did T-rex have ANOTHER affair he can’t remember?
  • Wasn’t T-rex maybe a bit young to have an affair with Utahraptor in the first place? But then who knows how fast dinosaurs mature anyway?

Other possible solutions:

  • Maybe the first two panels of June 18th 2003 are a flashback to -7 YBDST? Too bad it would be impossible to construct a new timeline using that assumption.

[edit] The Sleep Controversy

The comic for August 8th 2003 says T-rex decides to stop sleeping and then 20 years later he has apparently held his word. To correspond with T-rex’s age as hinted at in comic for May 26th 2006 it is assumed the following comics don’t take place 20 years later. But then what is up with T-rex sleeping all the time? Huh? It doesn’t make any sense!

There are actually at least two interpretations of the sleep comic. One is that T-rex is surprised that Utahraptor forgot that he never sleeps, and another is that he's surprised that he remembers that he once tried to stop sleeping. The second would probably create a less messy timeline, but this has not been tested.

[edit] The Time Machine Controversy

The comic for April 22th 2005 clearly shows T-rex going back in time, yet in July 26th 2005's comic he claims that he's never travelled back in time. What gives? Perhaps, while travelling back through time, he changed an important event that put things in motion so that he never went back in time.

When married the love of his life, he removed his motivation for going back in time and so never did.

[edit] Dualtimelineism

A controversial theory states that the comics following August 8th 2003 really do take place 20 years later. Therefore any comics in which T-rex claims to have been sleeping take place after T-rex’s long period of not sleeping had ended. The discrepancy with May 26th 2006 is explained with the April 22nd 2005 comic which states "T-rex goes back in time to when he was 20, finds the love of his life, and marries her." According to the theory, this creates a second timeline: Timeline B, and all the following comics take place in this timeline. Followers of the theory, the dualtimelineists, say the May 26th 2006 comic therefore simply takes place 5 years later. Those opposed to the theory, the monotimelineists, says this is unlikely as T-rex is shown to make New Year’s resolution only once in this supposed 5 years period. But the dualtimelineists points to the October 25th 2005 in which T-Rex marries someone who talks to a flapper. The span of the comic is said to be a few years. The Dualtimelineists thinks the following comics take place after these few years, and that the few years are in fact the 4 years needed to fill the gap between comics of April 22nd 2005 and May 26th 2006.

[edit] Dualtimelineism's version of the timeline(s)

This has been shortened somewhat.

TIMELINE A

- 18 YBDST

- 3 YBDST

- 3 YBDST

  • T-rex and Utahraptor may have had an affair T-rex can’t remember. The year is very approximate. (February 4th 2003)

0 YBDST

4 YBDST

7 YBDST

24 YBDST

  • T-rex has another affair he can’t remember. (May 13th 2004, check out the alt text.)

27 YBDST

  • Utahraptor invites T-rex to a slumber party, having forgotten that T-rex does not sleep. (August 8th 2003)
  • T-rex complains about New Year’s resolutions. (January 1st 2004)

28 YBDST

29 YBDST

  • T-rex goes back in time to when he was 20, thus ending timeline A. (April 22th 2005)

TIMELINE B

All years in timeline B are approximate, based on a guesstimate of how old T-Rex was before going back in time.

2 YBDST

6 YBDST

  • T-rex expresses regret for having married someone who talks like a flapper. (October 25th 2005)
  • T-rex makes a New Year’s resolution to make his name an eponymous adjective. (December 26th 2005)

7 YBDST

  • T-rex is said to be about 25 years old. (May 26th 2006, check out the alt text.)

[edit] Criticism of dualtimelineism

  • Monotimelineists says that if T-Rex went back in time to when he was 20 he would not in fact be 20 years old when arriving but instead have the age he had when he left, therefore dualtimelineism can’t explain why T-Rex should be said to be only 25 years old in the May 26th 2006 comic. Dualtimelineists say T-rex could have sent just his mind back in time to when his body was 20 and that T-Rex could not have known what it would feel like to marry the love of his life at 20 (like he claims to know at the end of the April 22nd 2005 comic) had he used any other form of time travel. The Dualtimelineists says Ryan North is well aware of this form of time travel as proven by the comics for November 17th 2004, the compressed film comic for the Butterfly Effect.
  • Monotimelineists says that had T-Rex really created a second timeline, then he would not have traveled to the moon in said timeline and yet in the September 30th 2005 comic Utahraptor reminds T-Rex that he had done so. The dualtimelineists says T-rex could simply have told Utahraptor that T-rex had been to the moon. They point out that Utahraptor makes no mention that he, Utahraptor, had been to the moon, something Utahraptor indeed would not have remembered to have done if timeline A had been destroyed. And isn’t that kind of suspicious, huh?
  • Monotimelineists says that if dualtimelineism is true, then the part of the September 18th 2003 comic where T-Rex is chided by a parent for stomping would have to take place after the events of the earliest Dinosaur Comics. They say that at that point T-Rex is too old to be chided by a parent and also too old to respond in such an immature way. Dualtimelineists says T-rex is always immature no matter how old he is, and anyway his mother totally chided him when they had that radio show together.
  • Monotimelineists says so like T-rex is supposed to first marry the love of his life, and then he marries some woman who talks like a flapper?! What’s the deal?! Dualtimelineists says we don’t know that much about Dinosaur Society. Maybe polygamy is totally OK there?
  • Monotimelineists says why would T-Rex start sleeping again in the first place, huh? He had a pretty sweet deal going! Dualtimelineists say that in the first comic where T-Rex is revealed to be sleeping again he says he has discovered the joys of sleeping naked! That explains it! Sleeping naked is Super delicious!

[edit] Controversy within dualtimelineism

There was a great uproar in the dualtimelineist community at the proposal of a new theory that went like this: Maybe the love of T-Rex's life that he married was in fact Dromiceiomimus! Maybe because they got married, they never split up in timeline B! Supporters of this theory, the dromiceiomimust-rexshipperdualtimelineists, says why else would the July 28th 2006 comic describe the meeting between T-rex and Dromiceiomimus as the most important day in T-rex’s life. Opponents of the theory, the mysteriouswomant-rexshipperdualtimelineists, says surely such a relationship would almost certainly have been noticeable in the dialog between T-rex and Dromiceiomimus in the following comics. For a while it seemed the debate would come to violence, but after some careful negotiation from a neutral third party things cooled down. Then somebody suggested maybe T-Rex is married to the Utahraptor and all hell broke loose.
