Mercs are awesome because they kill people for money, much like assassins but not as smart, or ninjas but not as expensive.
On the other hand, if a merc is worth caring about, then they usually aren't as heartless as most mercs are. Also, mercs are typically used as cannon fodder sometimes, so if you choose to be a merc keep away from big groups of other mercs because you will likely all be marched in front of the other army in a lame way, or maybe the rest of the mercs will switch sides at the last minute a la Braveheart
