Monthly themes are themes that are more or less arbitrarily decided each month, and many people adjust their avatars to represent that theme. The first "official" avatar month was announced by Eidam and was Klaw Appreciation Month, The Famous Mr. Klaw being the inspiration. The next month's theme was, therefore, Duck Month, since Eidam's avatar usually featured a duck.

The concept of themed avatars was already established at TABB several months prior to Klaw Month, as demonstrated by the Shirtless Celebrity Wave of December 8, 2005. and the "month where everyone had ugly pixelated comic book characters". Those didn't actually last for entire months though.
